What my 20s have taught me so far…

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for stopping by our very new and exciting group blog!

Brief introductions may be in order. My blogger moniker is Princess Pointful, which is also known as the most embarrassing name ever to have to introduce yourself as in real life. I’m 26 years old, which I am frightened may make the The Old One in this crew. I have, due to some naive reasoning when I was 17 and idealistic, been in school for many, many years, and am currently working on my PhD in Psychology. I live in a large Canadian city, and thus have a propensity for adding random “u”s into words. I reside with my boyfriend, The Duke, who is cute and scruffy and smart. I like bare feet, dill pickles, blowing bubbles, tacky mushroom paraphernalia, creating my own words which I then say with a straight face, and making up bad movie scripts about people on the street.

Given that this blog’s theme is life as a 20-something, I thought I may kick off with some lessons I have learned while making my way through this particular life-decade…

Your parents are real people. They are not just the perpetual icon of Mom and Dad. And, yes, this means with some very real, and very petty, flaws.

… but my mom still knows a lot more about my life than I would have ever expected. Like the times I thought I had really convinced her I was sober, or that my boyfriend had slept on the pull-out couch. She always knew the truth, but just let me get away with things sometimes.

Going to a movie alone is nowhere near as intimidating as you would expect.

Neither is living alone.

Neither is being single. Especially when the alternative is to stay in a lackluster relationship.

Nothing reveals who your true friends are quicker than an unexpected catastrophe.

More can be discovered about a new city by wandering aimlessly with yourself than by following a guidebook.

It is never worth it to try to save an alcoholic.

Wait as long as you can to get a credit card. I miraculously waited until I’d graduated from college, and am really glad my 20 year old self didn’t have access to “unlimited” funds.

Just go ahead and do the very thing you are hesitant to do. This is how I ended up in my current job, which scared the crap out of me when I initially heard about it, but has been one of the best challenges I’ve ever taken.

You will gain weight in your early 20s. Even if you aren’t eating bad cafeteria food– it’s not just the ‘Freshman 15′

Live music is the world’s best distraction.

It is always a good idea to have a unique signature dish. You never know when you will need to impress someone over dinner, and spaghetti and tomato sauce don’t always cut it. Mine? Balsamic beef stir fry or peanut curried chicken.

Everybody says it would be a great idea to move it together. Don’t always believe them.

It isn’t worth it to take on other people’s timelines.

A lot of girls like sex as much as, if not more than, boys. Myself included.

You always wait too long to quit a bad job or end a bad relationship.

It always takes double the amount of time to prepare food as it claims on the recipe.

Just because he knows you have a boyfriend doesn’t mean he won’t try to kiss you after a few drinks.

The impossible decisions of today are merely the taken for granted facts of tomorrow.

You are the only constant in every relationship problem you have. … although it always easier to blame the series of other people.

The boy who tells you that you are sexy when you talk about something smart is worth a million boys who tell you that you look sexy in a bikini.

Ahhh the last one is my favorite- and definitely something every person should know.

Also? You aren’t the oldest one. I’m pretty sure I am. ;)

  2. Jamie says:

That last one is the best. Seriously.

Love it, Princess. So happy to be working with you on this!

  3. Nilsa says:

Cute idea for a website. And I love your list - I can relate to most of what you’ve learned! But, here’s something you’ll learn as you approach your 30’s. Your eye-site isn’t what it used to be. So, if you want to keep this 30-something as a reader? Pretty please increase the size of your font. =)

I went to the cinema on my own for the first time last week and I loved it. Who’d have guessed :-)

And thanks for the one about food taking twice as long to prepare. I thought it was just me being useless as usual… :-)

  5. Yoda says:

    My name Borat!

    I like sex!!

    Sex very nice!!

    I like penis in Vagin!!

    Wowawiiiiwa!!

  6. Paula says:

Definitely some advice worth taking there!

  7. Sarah says:

the ex, yes another comment about the ex, always said it was sexy when i schooled him on politics. it made me feel better than when he commented on my appearance.

  8. Princess Pointful says:

Looks at me, all lonely at the bottom of the page ;).

Brandy- Fist bumps for us late 20s ladies!!

    Jamie- Eek! Me too!

Nilsa- You’re not the the only who had that remark. Our lovely design lady, Jess, upped the font size a little. Does that help?

Vicky- It is funny how we seem to be more scared of going to the movies alone than far more logical things, such as walking home late at night. I actually prefer not having to find a date for my weird choice in films sometimes.

Yoda- Profound, sir. I know I could count on you to be the one person to read no further than the sex comment.

Paula- Thanks! I wish I had known it all earlier, but I guess learning it is half the fun… or something.

Sarah- Cheers to that! It is nice to genuinely believe they appreciate the whole package, rather than just complementing your intelligence to get in your pants.

  9. libby says:

    LOVE that last one.

And as a 40-something, I can tell you that it’s true; the sex gets even BETTER. I would never go back to my 20’s in a million years :) (and I have no problem going to movies alone, BTW :)

I just stumbled onto this blog and am really glad I did. (: I’m in my senior year of high school, and reading this feels like I’m getting good advice from a group of people who’ve experienced the years that I feel that are looming in front of me.
