9 to 5

Hello everyone! Here is another memorable (and anonymous) guest post that got sent to me. If you have a post that you would like to share, you can email me at brandyismagic@gmail.com.

I haven’t been happy with work for a little over a year now. The type of work I do is under appreciated, pushed aside as something invariably tertiary. I’ve struggled since being promoted two years ago to change the mode of thought at my organization, but I have sadly come to realize management is not ready (and may never be ready?) for changing and moving forward. Sadly, I’m not the only one who thinks this.

Here’s a little background. I work for a non-profit that is suppose to help others, and some people in my organization definitely do their utmost to make a change in the developing countries we work in. Yet our organization is falling behind because our lovely managers are from the old school of thought that your work can speak for itself. Which is allowing our competitors to fly past us at Superman speed.

What’s more they refuse to fire those who are literally a waste of time and money at the organization simply because they do not do their work by a) shoving it off onto someone else below them and taking credit for it or b) have no freakin’ clue what they are doing in the first place but pretend they do.

Take for example my friend’s boss: this woman is I’m guessing in her early 40s and has been working at the organization for oh probably over 8 years now. If not more. She has constantly been promoted for what reason, I don’t know.

Over this past year, we found out (through many, many whispers) that she has severely muddled up relations for us in one of the regions of the world we work in, she is the type I previously mentioned – making others do her work and taking credit for it – and will at any opportunity keep her supervisees from being promoted by attempting to delay the process or diplomatically bad mouthing them. She did all this to my friend, who I am happy to say, fought tooth and nail for her promotion and got it (after almost losing her sanity)!

In a nutshell, she’s a snake. The type that will smile whenever she sees you but is just as ready to drive a nice big knife in your back as soon as you turn around.

Well guess what happened with her? She got promoted. PROMOTED! Which means she gets a nice fancy title AND more money. Turns out her husband plays golf with our center’s director. Spectacular isn’t it? Buddy-buddy on the green hills of the golf course.

Just in case you are wondering, she didn’t have to sleep with anyone. Trust me, the people I work with are just far too nerdy and socially gauche to attempt anything of the sort.

This is just one story, one person out of many. Yes, I have been looking for work, but not as actively as I should be. There are days I want to walk up to my boss (who thankfully is not like the woman I mentioned) and tell him “I quit.” And then simply walk out.

But I can’t because I need the benefits like health insurance and paid vacation days. I’m still looking though, I haven’t given up. In the meantime, I keep my head low, desperately try to do my work and attempt not to hit any co-worker that comes my way with a nice big ol’ steel baseball bat.

Oh how I miss those carefree college days. Where did they all go?

Unfortunately, I’ve seen that the less work you do, and the more you screw up, the faster you’ll get promoted.

Good luck on finding something new!

There’s a lady I work with who is ridculously stupid and pawns off her work on other people.

Sometimes I want to turn off all the power in her office, disconnect her phone, lock her in and make her do crossword puzzles all day until it’s time to go home…

because we would ALL be more productive if crossword puzzles were her job.

The working world is so unfair. Keep looking, I’m sure there’s something out there for you.

Ah the world of non-profits eh?

Try having a board of directors with the average age between them at 65. Try explaining to them we can’t keep paying the assistant who’s been here for almost 27 years because all she does is read the newspaper, since she can’t work a computer and doesn’t understand when we try to teach her.

Try having uneducated 65 year olds tell you how to do your job “because that’s how it’s always been done” when they’ve hired us specifically because we’re young, university educated and knowledgeable.

Just so ya know, I’m with you on this one! And while I’ve had the opportunity to work in an AMAZING, innovative, forward thinking non-profit, I’ve also seen the other side of them. Just because the words “non-profit” are tacked in front of it, doesn’t mean it’s a “good” organization.

    Gah.
This is the problem with trying to find a “career”– you invest so much, it makes jobs so hard to walk away from.
Remember, though, your sanity is worth more than health benefits. Trust me.
    Good luck!!
