I will most likely be losing my position due to budget cuts in May. If that happens I would be filtered into a different position due to seniority. I wish I didn't have seniority. I pray every day that my boss makes some little mistake in this process so that I get pushed out the door. I guess I'm saying, I completely understand.

However, unlike you, the idea of this change scares me SHITLESS!

Definitely know how you feel. I felt the same way, until it got so bad and boring that I decided to leave anyway.

It would have been great if they were handing out redundancy cheques though!

All I can say, as someone 6 months unemployed, is be careful what you wish for. It is not fun 6 months later and still not having a job or any prospects, struggling for cash and knowing your unemployment is running out soon.

I got laid off last year in February, and getting rid of that job was one of the best possible things for my state of mind.

HOWEVER. When I finally started seriously hitting the job search pavement, it took me over four months to find employment again, and I was flat broke by the time I got a job offer. I like the job I finally got better than the last one, but I took a pay cut and will end up hating this one too if I stay here for years. I ended up taking it because it was the first thing I was offered and I couldn't afford to be picky anymore. I don't know if this is the economic climate in which to be hoping for a layoff as a jumping off point to inject some new life into your career. It may work out that way, but it may not work out as you'd hoped. I hope you have a healthy emergency fund if you're hoping to be laid off, because it really sucks to be in the shoes I was walking in for awhile there.

I know SO many friends who've said they feel the same way - that they actually HOPED they'd be laid off when the next round came. Me? I'm in a relatively new position that I like and that's treating me well, but is it my dream job? No. Would I take the severance package happily and use that as a jumping off point to pursue other interests? Absolutely.

I can relate, sort of. When we were going through lay-offs, in trying to look at the bright side, I thought that if I was one of the (un)lucky ones, maybe it would give me the courage to finally move somewhere else ... which I always talk about, but never do.

But that was just me trying to be positive. I was so thankful when I wasn't on the chopping block because I really do love my job. However, I think it's still good to have a positive outlook on the "what if". It helps you prepare for it, and if it's something that will really give you a kick start into something better, well, that's a good thing!

Just think how relaxed you can be at work now... "Who cares if they lay me off. I'm extending my afternoon break to include a nap."

If my job in Pittsburgh were going to lay people off, I'd be happy about it. I'd reccommend myself as first in line. But people are quitting so they actually NEED people to work.

While I agree with you to a point I think it is too big of a risk. My job is changing as my company is reorganizing and while that isn't going to cause my job to disappear there could be cuts in a few months. And while I don't really like my job and surely don't want to do it forever I know that I hated doing crap jobs even more. At least here I get excellent benefits and an okay salary. It is better than some of the other jobs that I might have to take if I can't find work quickly.
